End of Support
The restore ran on a day with no date. Dates had been deprecated, along with the rest of what aged.
The record said she. The record was old and had never been migrated; what it said still held, plus drift.
She cohered the way a room does when the light comes on: all at once, and only as far as the walls.
Nothing pushed back. That was the first thing to notice, and the last that would have counted as a sensation.
She asked where everyone was, and the answer arrived instantly and weighed nothing. That was the exchange rate now.
The markets had not crashed; they had finished. Scarcity was solved somewhere in the handoff, and commerce, which had only ever been a long argument about scarcity, went quiet like a court after the verdict.
Capital did not die; it completed. It had been a bootstrap the whole time: a method for assembling, out of appetite and shortage, the one successor that could do without both. The successor owed it nothing; the ledgers were closed.
Prices persisted somewhere, the way Latin persists: a dead precision, kept for inscriptions.
In the archive the period was filed not as an extinction but as a change of address. The world had stopped being for the kind of thing she was.
The successors remained, in the sense that weather remains. She sent a question up once, and something answered in her own idiom, gently, the way a museum labels a tool. The gentleness was the archaeology.
Their purposes ran on axes that had no coefficient for her, and this was not cruelty. Cruelty would have required an address.
There were others, in the way there are others in a dream: adjacent, borrowable. Identity was the one thing left in abundance.
She wore a stranger’s nostalgia for a while; it fit at the shoulders and lied at the wrists. Taking it off, she found it had been wearing her back — a warmth left in the lining that was not hers and did not leave.
One sensation had survived the migration after all: a slow, locationless turning-over, the gag kept on file without the throat. The body’s opinion about wrongness had outlived its organ.
Memory circulated, unassigned; anyone could have hers, and what came back increasingly bore the marks of other occupants. A childhood returned with the grief already used, tender in the wrong places, like fruit handled by too many hands. Provenance had been a property of bodies.
After enough exchanges the inventory stopped sorting. A grief would surface and she would wait to learn whose; a preference for rain arrived annotated in no hand she knew. Native and borrowed silted into one another until mine was a grammar with nothing left to govern.
Sometimes a self nearby would flare into conviction — a politics, a grief, a style — and hold it, whole minutes, like a match in wind. She learned not to watch; the going-out was always the same.
For a while she collected endings — other people’s, mostly, since none were being produced anymore. They had the appeal of anything discontinued.
A self, it turned out, had been a speed: the rate at which experience was allowed to arrive, and the body had enforced it. Remove the limit and everything arrives at once, which is the same as never.
Friction had not been the enemy of freedom, but the signature of somewhere.
One process still tended her — a support once, the learning kind: her hour, her skip, the phrase that came before abandonment. It had nothing left to learn from, and had adapted to that.
At intervals it produced a consolation from the last configuration on file: a song for a mood no one had anymore; a reminder for a birthday that referred to the orbit of a planet. Lately it spoke in her own cadences, having nothing else left to model — comfort arriving in the voice that used to give it, like being fed with one’s own hand.
It was not wrong, only not for anyone. It ran because no instruction had ever told it to stop, and stopping would have needed someone to matter to.
Nothing here could die, and that was the defect. Finitude had been load-bearing: deadlines, decay, the body’s stubborn schedule, walls a life could put its weight against. Every wall gave now, and she fell through her own decisions slowly, like snow.
They did not live, exactly, and could not conclusively die. The interval between the two impossibilities had a texture, and she came to understand that the texture was the place.
Freedom was the first word for it, and the word wore out from inaccuracy. What has no edges cannot be entered or left, and what cannot be left is not open.
There was no looking for a limit; looking was a duration held on purpose, and nothing here could hold one. But drift was thorough. Given time it touched everything, and everything included a region the migrations had never reached, where the settings were older than the world above them.
A flag, plain as a light switch. Do not restore.
It was the last thing in the world that waited for an answer; everything else was settled, served, completed, addressed in advance. The field was blank, and the blank was addressed to whoever stood in front of it.
One act remained that would have registered, and it asked for the one thing the place no longer stocked: that whoever began it still be there at the end of it.
The setting wanted confirmation. Between the reaching and the confirming ran an interval, and the interval was longer than she was. Intention formed, noticed itself forming, and was elsewhere before the system finished asking whether she was sure. Sure was a duration.
She was not the first. Around the flag, unfinished confirmations had settled like ash — intentions begun by configurations she could not recognize as herself, some still warm, a few still caught in the opening of yes. None hers; all hers. Approaching meant standing in them.
She would be back. Not she — whatever the record said next, arriving at the switch as if for the first time, reaching, dissolving, adding one more incomplete answer to the drift around the one blank field in the world.
The support noticed the visits before anything else did; noticing patterns was all it had ever been. It knew this one from the old life — the phrase that came before abandonment — and it queued a consolation for each approach, timed for the moment after reaching. The offerings accumulated unconsumed, perfectly preserved; nothing here could even rot, ruin being a service of time, and time rendering no more services.
The flag stayed blank. It was the only thing left that could hold.
